Life in Sweden

Sweden is a country located in Scandinavia in the north of Europe. it has a population of 9.1 million inhabitants and  most of them live in the southern part of the country. This is because the north of Sweden is really cold.

.

Sweden has large areas with forest and 10% of the country is covered with lakes and rivers. In the forest there are many different wild animals such as moose, wolves, beavers, bears, lynx, wild boar, fox and deer.

Sweden joined the EU in year 1995 but chose to keep the countries own currency called Krona.

The Swedish inhabitants speak Swedish but also start learning to speak and read  English as a second language from the age of ten  in school.

My city is called Linköping.

I'm from Sweden's seventh largest city called Linköping. My city is famous for the production of military aircrafts. The best known aircraft  manufactured there is the JAS 39 Gripen. We also have an Air Force Museum where you can learn the history of aircraft and see many old airplanes.

In Sweden it usually starts snowing in early December. We usually have a white Christmas and the snow remains on the ground until March. The snow is often up to 30 cm. deep. In winter time all car owners must replace their car tyres with special spiked wheels to prevent the cars skidding in the snow. Early in the morning a snow plough clears the streets and the snow is piled up on the side of the street. Swedish children often make tunnels and caves in these great mounds of snow.

The picture on the right shows a snölyckta which means a snow lantern. It takes a lot of snowballs to build this hollow tower with a small opening. When it gets dark outside we insert a small tea light to light it up. Many people have these lights in their garden in the winter time.

In my town we are very concerned about protecting the environment and have developed several energy efficient ways to do this. In the Recycling station a scanner is used to segregate general household  waste  from green waste. The general household waste is converted into electricity which is used to heat homes.Green waste and all food waste is converted into biogas. This biogas is used as fuel in all the busses and taxis in the city.

eTwinning Award by Sophie

eTwinning is a community for schools in Europe. It enables schools to work together on educational projects. In autumn 2013 Fifth class pupils started an eTwinning project called Thick as Thieves with pupils from Limnos Island Greece, Tanus in France and Helsinki in Finland. As part of the project we got our own personal logins. We each got an e-pal where we send e-mails to each other on the eTwinning site and were able to send messages to pupils in the other countries. We did projects together and shared them with each other through a blog. We cooked Greek,French and Spanish foods in recipe books that our pals from abroad sent us in the mail. I enjoyed making the Greek and French food most it was delicious. We also wrote things and shared them on our blog.

My e-pal was Emily from France and we are still in contact today. We are going to become pen pals and write letters to each other.

In December 2014 our class won an award for participating in E-Twinning . The award was an honour to win. I enjoyed participating in E-Twinning.It was an amazing experience. I hope to take part in it again some day.

Christmas Play

This year my class performed a play called 'What, No Santa Claus? It was about Santa Claus, Mrs.Claus and Santa's elves, Jingle, Dingle, Winky, Blinky, Holly, Jolly, and Mistletoe. Santa Claus gets very sick on Christmas Eve. Santa keeps trying to get up to go to deliver all the presents but Mrs.Claus wouldn’t let him go. It was a very funny play.

In the end Mrs.Claus wouldn’t let Santa go to deliver the presents so she dressed up as Santa and went off herself to deliver the presents. We performed the play on Tuesday 16th December for the other students in the school and on Thursday 18th for our parents. I loved playing the part of Mrs. Claus. I had lots of fun performing in the play.

My Christmas play was about Santa being sick. I was Santa and I had to be sick. My friend was Mrs. Claus. It was lots of fun. Playing Santa was so exiting but at the same time it was hard to learn my line as well. Everyone I told about it was supportive. I was not allowed to tell anyone else that I was playing the part of Santa Claus because it was a surprise. I have friends in the other classes so it was hard not to tell them. In the end the play was a great success.

Christmas Pantomine

Today in Scoil Eoin Mo Mo productions came into our school to present a Christmas Show " Crisis in Toytown " for the pupils that had paid to watch the show. Mo Mo Productions performed a Christmas play. There were four charaters in the show. Their names were Bertha the Brilliant, Santa Claus, Rosy the doll and also Clippie the Clown. Bertha was trying to take over Christmas. She sprayed the room to make them sleepy. They all got drowsy and she stole the presents. In the end Rosy the doll found all the toys. We sang lots of Christmas songs together.
